Before Hawaiʻi was developed with lights, wires and buildings, the stars and moon guided seabirds out over the sea to mature for 5 to 6 years before they return to their natal colony to mate and raise their own chicks. Today, when chicks leave their nests for the first time, our infrastructure can distract them from their course and they can become grounded and prey for cats, mongoose, and dogs and are at risk of being run over by cars. MNSRP recovers downed seabirds and releases unharmed individuals back to the wild.
You can help Save Our Seabirds! Citizens become first responders when they find grounded seabirds, saving them from predation or traffic fatality. If you have found a seabird, please call 808-573-BIRD and see our Found A Bird? page for more information. Tell your friends and family to keep an eye out for grounded seabirds!
SOS is a partnership project with the Department of Land and Natural Resources: Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR/DOFAW), Hawaiʻi Electric Company (HECO), Haleakalā National Park (HALE), Alexander & Baldwin, and the County of Maui. SOS members are dedicated to minimizing threats to seabirds and rescuing birds grounded due to artificial light attraction and wire collisions.
