Seabirds are hard to see, often spending long periods at sea or burrowing underground. We work to increase their visibility and significance in Maui Nui.

Community
We connect with community members to increase awareness of seabirds and understanding of why our islands need them. At beloved events across Maui, we share the mo‘olelo of seabirds with residents and visitors alike, educating about threats seabirds face and ways community members can advocate for and protect the birds. For organizations wanting to expand their knowledge and protocol for protecting seabirds, we offer ecology talks and additional resources to strengthen their understanding.
Businesses
We work with local businesses and hotels to raise awareness of seabird fallout and advance wildlife-friendly lighting across their properties. Under Maui County Ordinance 5434, commercial businesses are required to follow specific outdoor lighting protocols to reduce harm to native wildlife and the community. We support businesses in understanding these requirements and navigating the ordinance with practical solutions. We also visit businesses and hotels annually to provide instruction on how to properly handle downed seabirds on their properties.

Students
We work with educators to prepare the next generation of seabird stewards. Through partnerships with schools and educational organizations, we teach students about the seabirds they may encounter in their communities. We support educators by developing seabird-focused curriculum, promoting careers in conservation, and participating in student-centered programs that inspire care and respect for Hawai‘i’s seabirds and native ecosystems.
